Ian Campbell started to play competitive chess in 1975 when he joined the chess club at University and has continued to play all his adult life.

In 1996 the English Chess Federation awarded him the title of Arbiter, or referee, helping to organise and run weekend tournaments for all players and many tournaments for young players only including those run by the English Primary Schools Chess Association. Chess has taken him to many parts of the UK and abroad to France, The Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Spain and Gibraltar as a player, arbiter, guide and team manager. Many places, many faces and many happy times. Ian started coaching junior players in 2008 and joined CSC as a voluntary chess coach in 2012.

He says there is great satisfaction in watching a young person grasp hold of an idea and develop it. The delight and pleasure on the face of a young person when the point is understood is more than ample reward for the effort.
