David Hardy was born in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1957 and began playing chess aged 18 when he joined Mossley Chess Club and started playing in the local Manchester League.
Later he moved to the Oldham area and joined Oldham Chess Club. He moved to his present club of 3C's in 1981 and has played there ever since.
For four years he was the Games Editor for the NATCOR correspondence magazine. In common with many chess players he always takes a set and board with him when he goes abroad and has managed games with locals in countries as far away as Chile and Argentina.
David started Ashton Community Chess Club – specifically for junior players - in February 2010 and he also runs a coaching group at 3C’s.
His highest ever ECF grading has been 199.
He joined CSC in July 2010 as the Manchester Field Worker but still teaches in 12 schools each week.
Away from chess he is a season ticket holder at Manchester City and umpires Hockey matches when time permits.
