Chris Kirkland has been playing chess since his father taught him at the age of six.

Born in Harrow, Middlesex, but later moving to Nottingham and Sheffield, he has benefited from playing chess in three different counties, and numerous leagues. Currently based in Sheffield and working on a PhD in politics, Chris teaches chess and runs chess clubs in two local primary schools; Firs Hill and St Catherine’s.

Alongside this teaching he has served for a year as the president of Sheffield University chess club and helped instigate its volunteering programme. With help from CSC and others, the programme has established chess clubs in two secondary schools; Fir Vale and Firth Park.
