Dan Staples began teaching chess for CSC near the beginning of the project. In a previous life he worked for the Home Office and then the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. He is now teaching chess in schools in London and doing organisational work in CSC’s Baker Street HQ.

Dan is really enjoying teaching chess. He finds the children's energy and enthusiasm for the game inspiring. He has a strong interest in the process of learning and has found Dr Carol Dweck's concept of a growth mindset very valuable. His favourite film about teaching is Stand and Deliver!

Dan is keen to improve his own chess understanding and tries to work at his game when family life allows. He has had lessons with GM Nigel Davies and has found working with Nigel fascinating and very rewarding. He would recommend getting a coach to anybody seriously interested in improving.
