Shaun Walsh starting playing chess many, many years ago by watching other children when at school. He was quite good but only ever played casually.

Competitively he is a bit of a late starter when about 10 years ago he went along to Downend & Fishponds chess club and fell in love with the game. He enjoys playing, watching (live games, recordings documentaries, films), reading books and now teaching.

He is captain of a team at Downend and tournament secretary, running two successful tournaments a year. He is also a regular congress player and a bit worried about the demographic make up of congresses with many older players and so few young people. He is doing his bit by teaching chess at Glenfrome primary school to bring fresh blood into the game. He also finds teaching very rewarding with obvious benefits.

He is also pleased to be a member of chess club which actively supports and coaches children.
