Secondary School Chess on Merseyside

We’ve seen a large increase in the number of secondary schools taking up chess on Merseyside of late, with Alsop High School and Belvedere Academy among the schools to join our programme this year. To encourage more activity, our Regional Coordinators, Rob Steele and Maga Hamblett, organised a new event last week - the first Secondary Mersey League "All Play All" tournament.

Hosted by Notre Dame Catholic College, this inaugural event featured four schools, Blessed Carlo Acutis, St Francis Xavier's, and St Augustine’s being the visitors. It was a fantastic day of competition, with Notre Dame finishing worthy winners. A knockout blitz tournament followed, with Reegan deservedly finishing in first place.

Our huge thanks to our hosts, and to the Merseyside team for all their hard work. It’s great to see chess spreading through secondary schools, allowing children who have learned the game in our thriving primary school programme to continue to enjoy the game in their next phase of education.
