Tutor Training Days
CSC Regional Organiser for Merseyside Rob Steele with his course delegates
Our training team has had a busy few days, running courses across England for people who want to teach chess in schools. We run two types of courses: CPD sessions for school staff who plan to set up a chess club in their own school, and Tutor Recruitment and Training Days for people who want to help us deliver our Schools’ Programme in the classroom.
First up was a tutor training day in Wakefield. Prospective tutors from Yorkshire and beyond joined us at the intriguing King of the North Archery and Chess centre for an excellent session delivery by CSC’s Chief Trainer, Sean Marsh. Next was an online CPD session, where we welcomed teachers from as far afield as London, Middlesbrough and Northern Ireland, giving them an overview of the mini-games we use to teach chess. A couple of days later, twelve new tutors joined us in Bristol for a course led by Matt Piper. Finally, CSC’s Regional Organiser for Merseyside ran a course for new recruits in his region at North Liverpool Academy.
All our courses cover the methods we use to teach chess, the teaching resources we can make available, and offer some extra ideas for running chess clubs. In addition, our tutor training days which are aimed at people who don’t currently work in schools, cover classroom management techniques, our 30-week curriculum, and the aims and objectives of CSC itself: why we teach chess and where we teach it. These days are just part of the training we offer our tutors - there followed an extensive programme of shadowing to gain experience in the classroom, as well as regular courses in safeguarding, classroom management techniques, and more. CSC is currently actively recruiting tutors in most parts of the country and we have three more training courses planned for the autumn term. To find out more and to book, please visit this page.
