Bradford Schools Chess Tournament
We’ve seen a growing interest in chess in primary schools in Bradford over the past couple of years. On 24th June, Newby Primary School kindly hosted our 2026 Bradford Schools Chess Tournament. Newby, Horton Grange and Lilycroft primary schools all sent in teams of enthusiastic children.
The event was run by our Yorkshire team of Dan Staples and Dom Lodge, ably supported by local tutor Dave Barlow. All three were very impressed by the standard of play, and the many examples of sporting behaviour from the children of all three schools. Each school won medals in the individual competition, while in the team event, Horton Grange came first by the narrowest of margins over Newby.
On a warm day the watermelon and drinks provided by the host school were gratefully received! There is already interest amongst other schools who are keen to take part in the next Bradford competition.
Annabel Naylor, Deputy Head at Horton Grange said "Thank you so much for inviting pupils from Horton Grange. They had a fantastic time!" Our thanks and congratulations to everyone involved.
