Chess at the Cheesegrater

The Leadenhall Building, known to many as the Cheesegrater, lies at the heart of the City of London. Nestled between the Lloyds Building and the Gherkin, it is home to many financial firms especially those involved in the insurance business, as well as to RSHP, the architectural firm founded by Richard Rogers which was responsible for its unique design.

On Monday 20th July, to celebrate World Chess Day, CSC was invited by the Leadenhall Building to run some lunchtime chess activities in the public realm at the foot of the building. CSC tutors Nevil Chan and Bob Eames were on hand to take on all-comers and give some coaching tips to the visitors. There was some great chess played, including a memorable if unsound attempt at the Greek Gift sacrifice. We are delighted to be joined for a few games by Women’s International Master and long-time friend of CSC, Natasha Regan who works locally.

CSC has close links with the City of London. For the past few years we have run an annual chess tournament for all the schools of the City of London Corporation, while more recently we have been very fortunate to receive the support of volunteers from the London Stock Exchange at both the London Chess Classic and ChessFest. Our prisons programme has been generously funded by the Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Fund while employees from Bloomberg regularly give their time to help run our club in HMP Isis. We look forward to making further links in the future.
