ChessFest Liverpool Breaks Attendance Records

ChessFest Liverpool returned to Chavasse Park at Liverpool ONE on Sunday 19th July, attracting a record number of visitors for what proved to be one of the most successful ChessFest events ever held in the city. Blessed with glorious sunshine throughout the day, thousands of visitors enjoyed a packed programme of free chess activities suitable for all ages and abilities. Families, friends, complete beginners and experienced players all came together to celebrate the game in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

The event was coordinated by CSC’s Regional Organisers for Merseyside, Rob Steele and Magda Hamblett, supported by a fantastic team of dedicated tutors and volunteers. Throughout the day, visitors were able to enjoy free chess lessons, giant outdoor chess, casual play tables, simultaneous displays against leading Merseyside players, an art station and the ever-popular blitz tournaments. The junior blitz tournament was won by Charles Wong from Our Lady of Good Hope Primary School, following an impressive series of performances against a strong field of young players. The adult competition ended in a tie, with Joe Legerton of Caldy School and John Clarke from St Edward's College sharing first place after an excellent afternoon of fast-paced chess.

The organisers were delighted to welcome Alison Sharp, chair of our trustee board, whose visit highlighted the charity's continued commitment to expanding chess opportunities for children and communities across the country. Rob Steele, Regional Organiser for CSC Merseyside, said, "ChessFest is all about bringing people together through chess. To see Chavasse Park full of families learning, laughing and enjoying the game in such fantastic weather was wonderful. Breaking our attendance record made the day even more special, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make it happen."

ChessFest continues to demonstrate the growing popularity of chess across Merseyside and provides an opportunity for people of every age and ability to discover the many educational and social benefits of the game. We would like to thank Liverpool ONE, all the CSC tutors and volunteers, competitors, families and visitors whose enthusiasm helped make ChessFest Liverpool 2026 another memorable success.
