Coventry Schools Chess Tournament
The next few months promise to be an exciting time for chess in Coventry: the 2026 British Chess Championships are being hosted by the University of Warwick over the summer. As part of the legacy planning for that, CSC is teaming up with Coventry City Council, the English Chess Federation, and Sports Games to get more chess played in local schools.
Last week we held the first of three schools tournaments at AT7, a local leisure centre. This first event was aimed at secondary schools while the second will be for primary schools. The leading schools in each event will go on to the grand finale at the end of the summer term.
Three schools took part: Meadow Park, President Kennedy, and Westwood Academy. Students competed over five rounds with medals being awarded for the highest individual scores and a trophy for the winning team. The competition was extremely close, with every player contributing to the final result. In the final reckoning, just a single point separated the top two teams and only five points separated the field.
Our congratulations to Meadow Park School, the winners with 102 points, and to our gold medalist, Jeremiah. Huge thanks to everyone who took part and supported the event. We are already looking forward to the primary school tournament in May!
