Feryal Clark MP Visits CSC Tournament
Suffolks Primary School in Enfield has been part of CSC’s Schools’ Programme for several years. Our amazing tutor, Bob Eames, visits the school every week to deliver two curriculum chess lessons as well as running a club. On Friday 19th June, the school played host to a tournament for the Enfield Town Schools Partnership (ETSP), a fantastic charity which supports 19 schools across the borough.
Seven schools took part, each sending in a team of keen chess players - 65 children in all - for a tournament run by CSC. They were delighted to receive a visit from the Feryal Clark, MP for Enfield North, who watched some of the games and was even brave enough to take on some of the children over the chessboard between rounds. Feryal said, 'I am incredibly impressed with the ETSP Chess Tournament and the number of children taking part. It was great to see our young children concentrating and exercising their minds. I hope to see more children from schools across Enfield taking part in this exciting tournament next year.'
The whole event was played in an excellent spirit, the participants displaying enthusiasm and competitiveness, but also showing great sporting behaviour. After a closely-fought tournament, the players with the highest scores received certificates and medals, while St George’s Primary School took home the trophy for the highest team score. Every player left with some chess goodies, and a determination to continue their chess learning back at school. CSC is talking to several schools in the Partnership about how we can support them in this.
Our huge thanks to Debbie and Jennifer from the ETSP for all their hard work arranging the event, to Suffolks Primary School for their incredible hospitality, and to Feryal Clark for supporting what we hope will become a great new event in the North London chess calendar.
