Wandsworth Schools’ Tournament

CSC teaches in 11 schools in the borough of Wandsworth in south west London, with our programme in the area being generously supported by a local donor. On Monday 15th June, three of these schools came together for an end-of-year chess tournament kindly hosted by Falconbrook Primary School.

In total, 46 children took part, each playing four games of chess in a Swiss format. For most, it was their first experience of competitive chess - they received advice and guidance from CSC tutors Rhiannon, Nevil, and Vincent, as well as from our Regional Organiser for the borough, Zoran Koneski. All our staff were very impressed, not just with the excellent standard of play, but also with the supportive atmosphere in which the games were played - the event was competitive but there were many examples of sporting behaviour.

Congratulations to our individual winners and gold medalists, Jasir and Manny, both of whom achieved a perfect 12/12 score. In the team competition, Earlfield Primary took home the trophy, with Falconbrook and Ronald Ross tied for second place not far behind. At the end of the event, all the participants took home some chess goodies as a reward for their hard work.

Our thanks to all the schools, teachers, and pupils in our programme across Wandsworth for an excellent year of learning. We look forward to working with many more children in the borough from September. If you are from a Wandsworth school and are interested in introducing chess to your school, please contact us here.
