Making Moves on Merseyside
We recently reported on a hugely successful girls’ tournament held at Holly Lodge School in Liverpool. However, that is just part of the amazing chess ecosystem being developed across the region by our hard-working Merseyside team. We are now teaching in over 50 schools in the area, running chess leagues to give schools the chance to compete against each other, supporting the Merseyside Chess Academy to give the keenest children the chance to develop into strong players, and running community clubs in many of Liverpool’s libraries.
Rob Steele and Magda Hamblett, our Regional Organisers for Merseyside, are at the heart of all these activities. Their recent newsletter highlights how busy they’ve been over the past few weeks, as well as providing some light chess relief in the form of the puzzle above (White to play and checkmate in two moves).
Far from putting their feet up, Rob and Magda are now preparing for a chess-packed summer, with our annual schools’ tournament taking place in the amazing setting of St George’s Hall on 8th July, followed soon after by ChessFest which returns to Chavasse Park on Sunday 19th July for a sixth consecutive year. Whether you are young or not-so-young, expert or not-so-expert, there’s a chess activity for you on Merseyside, and our team would love to see you there.
