Record-Breaking Turnout at CSC Primary Chess Championships
St George's Hall once again provided a magnificent setting for the annual Chess in Schools & Communities (CSC) Primary School Chess Championships, which this year welcomed the largest turnout in the event's history. More than 400 children, representing over 30 primary schools and 80 teams, gathered from across the region to compete in four age sections. Schools travelled from across Merseyside and beyond, with teams representing communities from Bootle and Wavertree to the Wirral, highlighting the continued growth and popularity of school chess throughout the region.
The event was led by Regional Organisers Rob Steele and Magda Hamblett, supported by a dedicated team of 20 CSC tutors and volunteers, whose enthusiasm and hard work ensured the day ran smoothly from start to finish.
Throughout the tournament, the hall was filled with concentration, determination and excitement as hundreds of young players demonstrated not only their chess ability, but also outstanding sportsmanship, respect and resilience. Whether competing for medals or simply enjoying the experience of representing their school, every participant contributed to a wonderful celebration of chess.
Congratulations to all of the winning teams and individual prize winners, whose performances reflected the high standard of chess now being played across the region. More importantly, every child who took part should be proud of their effort, commitment and conduct throughout the day. Congratulations to St Bridget's U11 team who won the coveted Dave Robertson Trophy.
We are especially grateful to Lord Mayor Will Shorthall and Councillor Nick Small for taking the time to attend the championships and for their thoughtful and encouraging words to the children, schools and organisers. Their support added to the occasion and reinforced the importance of opportunities that inspire young people through education, strategy and healthy competition.
Finally, our sincere thanks go to every school, teacher, parent, volunteer and CSC tutor who helped make the event such a tremendous success. The record-breaking attendance reflects the incredible growth of chess in our schools, and we are already looking forward to making next year's championships even better.
