Leeds Primary Schools Chess Tournament
On Tuesday 7th July, teams from six primary schools gathered at Gildersome Primary School for the annual Leeds Primary Schools Chess Competition. Yorkshire tutors Dan Staples, Dom Lodge, and Ernest Karumazondo were on hand to keep procedures running smoothly.
It was a brilliant opportunity for the students to compete and mix with other schools. One teacher commented on how it was great to see children from different schools chatting about their game after finishing. The behaviour of students was exemplary - one could hear a pin drop in the room during one of the rounds, much to the surprise of some teachers - despite there being 56 children present.
The host school took the win, with Pudsey Bolton Royd and Whingate coming 2nd and 3rd, only separated by the highest individual result from the respective schools. The winning school received medals, along with the highest scoring girls and boys. And all children received pens, mascots and pin badges to show off their love of chess!
Thank you to Miss Roclawski and Gildersome Primary School for organising and hosting the event. And to all the teachers who did a fantastic job getting stuck in with helping! We hope to build on the success of this event with the next competition, hopefully featuring more students and schools!
Schools present: Gildersome, Shakespeare, Whingate, Pudsey Bolton Royd, Pudsey Waterloo, and Ireland Wood.
