A Day of Chess for Merthyr Tydfil Schools
GM Michael Adams gives a simultaneous display
CSC was happy to support The Great Merthyr Schools Chess Tournament which returned this year on Friday 3rd July to the Dowlais Community Centre for a full day of chess fun, from 9:30am to 3pm. The players had some brilliant activities prepared for them including the anticipated annual tournament, Giant chess, and a visit from Grandmaster Mickey Adams, one of Britain’s greatest ever players. The event even received coverage on BBC Wales.
The tournament saw five Merthyr schools and over 90 pupils battle it out. The winning team was from Abercanaid Primary Community School, fresh from their 9th place finish at the Welsh Primary School Team Chess Championships.
GM Adams’ visit was also a true highlight and a rare opportunity for the children. Giving a simultaneous display and chess clinics throughout the day, Michael’s presence made the event truly special.
As well as chess the children also got a chance to cool off their brains, especially in the hot weather and enjoyed an ice-cream break in the middle of the day.
Thanks and congratulations go to all involved, in particular Robert Palser for his work organising and the Stephens and George Charitable Trust which supported the event. And above all of course the pupils who represented themselves so well and played some fantastic chess.
