CSC Prisons Conference

The CSC Prisons Programme sees the charity going into prisons and Young Offenders Institutions around the country, running chess clubs, coaching prisoners, and even taking part in international competitions. These services are delivered by a team of committed tutors, all of whom report on how rewarding they find the experience.

On Saturday 13th September, CSC held a gathering for many of these tutors, giving them the chance to meet each other, to share stories of best practice, and to take part in workshops aimed at making them better equipped for what can occasionally be a challenging working environment. The event was organised by two of our more experienced tutors, Ben Widdicombe and Professor Peter Hegarty, supported by our prisons coordinators, Peter Sullivan and Ben Wicks. Guest speaker was Jolel Miah, Senior Lecturer at the School of Social Sciences at the University of Westminster. Jolel is a psychologist who worked in behaviour change programmes in prisons for several years. He shared some of his experiences and offered advice on how best to communicate with prisoners when faced with difficult situations.

All of the sessions were extremely well received, and the day offered our tutors a great opportunity to learn both from our experts and from each other. If you are interested in becoming a tutor for us in a prison, please complete this form.
