Hackney Primary Schools Chess League

CSC has recently established a new primary schools chess league in the London Borough of Hackney. The first round was held at Morningside Primary last week, with five local schools taking part: Our Lady and St Joseph, St John the Baptist, William Patten, Morningside, and Rushmore. Each school brought a team of players who competed in a four-round Swiss tournament, with medals being awarded for the highest individual scores. The school that scores the most points at the end of the year will receive the grand trophy.

All the games were played in a friendly spirit but that’s not to downplay the competitiveness of the event. In fact, the games were so tough that only one pupil scored a maximum 4/4, while three of the team scores were separated by only a couple of points. Our Lady of St Joseph are the early leaders, but there’s still a lot of chess to be played before the season is over.

Our thanks to Morningside Primary for hosting this inaugural event and our congratulations to everyone who took part. The next round will be held at William Patten Primary School on 2nd March. If you are involved with a primary school in Hackney that might want to take part, our Regional Coordinator Russell Terry would love to hear from you.
