World Chess Day at Spitalfields Market
CSC’s club at Spitalfields Market, “Chess ‘n Chill” is proving extremely popular. About 50 people attend each Thursday evening, from City workers to local school children, enjoying casual games of chess infused by the smells of the street food stalls in the market. We even had our first Grandmaster visitor recently, Dan Fernandez popping in to play a few games against a friend.
On Sunday 20th July, we held a special session to celebrate World Chess Day, while the market was in full-swing. The turnout was amazing. All 16 chess boards were busy for the whole 6 hours we were there, and there was often a queue to sit down. Awate, our excellent tutor, was on hand to pair up people who didn’t have opponents and to provide some guidance for people who were new to the game.
The Spitalfields club will continue to run over the summer each Thursday evening, 6pm-8pm.
