Youth Justice CSC has recently begun to work with Youth Justice Services in the London Borough of Southwark, delivering chess activities to young offenders in the school holidays. The sessions are two hours long, suitable for complete beginners who want to learn about the game of chess, and are offered on an invitation-only basis to individuals identified by the Southwark Youth Offending Team. Why Chess? Extra-curricular activities give students soft skills that are critical to future employability. Chess develops social skills that help players think through the consequences of their actions and to take responsibility for them. Chess builds resilience, teaching students to win and lose graciously. A positive sporting achievement develops self-esteem. Teaching chess gives students a positive life-skill and a pass-time that they can share with friends and family.
