MP Jonathan Reynolds visits Chess in Schools in action

The MP for Stalybridge & Hyde Jonathan Reynolds visited CSC Chess Club in Stalyhill Junior School shortly before the end of the academic year to see the schools chess progression for himself. 

One Year Three Pupil ( Joseph O'Neil) almost scored a victory over the MP, here they are below with game faces on.

Mr Reynolds said "It was absolutely fantastic to see how much the kids get out of playing chess...I started playing in primary school and it makes you think laterally, plan ahead and learn new skills."

CSC cannot wait to invite the MP back again next year, and hopefully even the score.

Latest News: One-Day Chess Event

On Saturday 17 February 2018, a record attendance of 68 local children played chess at Broadoak & Smallshaw Community Centre, Ashton-under-Lyne.

The event hosted by Ashton Community Chess Club and Chess in Schools and Communities served as a qualifying event for the world's largest chess competition the Delancey Chess Challenge which began in 1996 and is run by the husband and wife team Alex and Sarah Longson. Sarah herself played in the event the first year it was held.

All the children acquitted themselves well with many players across the age group sections qualifying for the next stage of the competition. As well as the coveted qualification certificate the winners, runners up and third place in each section won medals, chess books and chess cup prizes.

The next stages of the event will be held in Cheadle Hulme or Oldham.
